Scientists sound alarm about GMO ‘madness’ tonight
Live in Vancouver 7PM, November 19/13

Concerned Canadians – eager for accurate information about Genetically Engineered (GE) foods – are rallying in large numbers behind two distinguished scientists who have undertaken an urgent, whirlwind national tour to share their knowledge about grave threats to human health and food security.

Dr. Thierry Vrain, a retired soil biologist and genetic engineer, former head of research and designated spokesperson to assure the public of the safety of genetically modified food, is now speaking out against GE technology after a 30-year career with Agriculture Canada. Dr. Shiv Chopra, a former Health Canada scientist for 35 years was fired after going public with concerns about potential human health risks associated with bovine growth hormone. His book, Corrupt to the Core: Memoirs of a Health Canada Whistleblower, is an international best seller.

They will be speaking this evening 7:00 PM (November 19) in Vancouver as momentum rapidly builds into an unstoppable grassroots movement demanding the immediate attention of elected officials, corporate executives and federal agencies.

“Meetings have been packed with a cross-section of the Canadian public who are justified in having very serious questions and not trusting or believing what they are being told,” says Vrain, who has spoken five times on Vancouver Island since November 14, utilizing an avalanche of recent independent scientific studies from Europe, where genetically modified foods have been banned.

“I am informing them that 80% of the food we now eat contains herbicides – including Monsanto’s Roundup – which are also antibiotics. There are traces of these toxins in all our bodies, doing damage to our gut, a slow, insidious process.

“It is highly probable that genetically engineered food contains toxic proteins and we simply do not understand how these fundamental units of life work, not even after the Genome Project, and most certainly in North America, where research is compromised by corporate funding” he reports.

“We must stop GE foods immediately and check this out thoroughly. To do anything else is absolute madness,” Vrain adds.

He and Chopra are motivated solely by their growing mutual concern. Twenty-eight events are scheduled for the western tour, and more being confirmed for the eastern tour (scheduled for January-February 2014).This is rapidly becoming a major issue and news story. Genetically Engineered (GE) Foods and Human Health, takes place in Vancouver, at the Canadian Memorial United Church at 15th and Burrard. Ample time is allotted for questions; donations accepted. Doors open 6:30, event starts 7:00 PM.

Next local stops on cross Canada tour: The speakers will be in Squamish, Nov. 20, at UBC the following afternoon (2 to 4PM,) in Coquitlam (Douglas College) Nov. 21, in Langley following evening Nov 22, returning to Vancouver, Saturday for workshop Nov. 23 at the Unitarian Church of Vancouver (949 West 49th Ave) 2:30 pm. See event map for rest of BC and Alberta.

The March

I was so stoked to see so many marchers in Victoria today!

Unfortunately I was only able to stay for a short time. But in that brief time, we marched as if our lives depended on it.  And they do!  Wanting to spread a positive message, our signs read We Didn’t Grow Up Eating GMOs.  Why Should You? Our Grandmas Didn’t Grow Up Eating GMOs.  Why should We?  Misty and I were dressed like our glamorous grannies in 1950s garb with our signs held up by Wooden Kitchen Spoons.

March for our Food

“Things do not happen. Things are made to happen.”
– JFK

I passionately encourage everyone everywhere to march tomorrow in the world’s second March Against Monsanto.  It’s being held in every major city in the world on October 12th.

Here is Dr Vandana Shiva explaining why we should March.

Although Monsanto is perhaps the least ethical of the corporations, they are not the only ones legally hijacking our food supply.  6 companies are in control here: Dow, Sygenta, Dupont, Bayer Crop Science, Basf  are just as culpable.  Between them, they control the global seed, pesticide and agricultural biotechnology markets.  This is not science fiction.  This is not a conspiracy theory.

“What you are seeing is not just a consolidation of seed companies, it’s really a consolidation of the entire food chain.” —Robert Fraley, co-president of Monsanto’s agricultural sector

This should have violated every anti-trust piece of legislation known to the courts.   Like monocrop agriculture is wrong, so are a handful of companies consolidating the food chain.   They say they are feeding the world.  Owning and poisoning the food supply doesn’t equate to feeding the world.  GMOs are not proven safe for human consumption.   They were released into our food supply after 3 month long rat studies.  Rats live 2 years!  The theory is that they use fewer pesticides.  The reality is that they use more pesticides than before.  The theory is that they give more nutrition.  The reality is that these are all just dreams and not one nutritionally enhanced food is commercially available.  As people wake up to this reality, they are outraged.

March for our Food.

March for the Bees who are beeing destroyed by neonicontinoid pesticides.  (Neonicotinoids are a common coating on GMO seeds)

March for justice for the 284 000 Farmers in India who have been driven to suicide.

March for biodiversity.

March for the system of farming that works: ORGANIC.  In side by side comparison studies Organic yields equal GMO yields over the long run.  In times of drought, Organic yields are greater than GMOs.  Without poisoning the Earth.

I’m leaving you with this image: Monarch butterflies flutter, Bees Buzz, Insects abound, Our rivers run clean.  Air is pure.  This all is possible if we grow organically. Listen to the Earth.  Respect her creatures.  Respect each other.   As Grandpa Rupert said,

“Always Leave the soil better than when you found it.”

Letter From My Niece

“Dear Auntie Gurdeep,

In my school, we have these presentations that we stand in front of the classroom and read a non fiction article under 2 minutes. One of the kids brought a letter written by Monsanto because his dad works at a cereal company and was curious about gmo’s. I was sickened by this letter explaining how wonderful gmo’s are and how they help so many people in the world who can’t buy expensive food. Once the kid finished presenting, I stood from my chair and shouted out the truth about gmo’s. My teacher was amazed at my ability to debate any situation from different perspectives, ( but  I also got in trouble for being negative about a kids presentation  and standing up from my seat). I have always been interested in gmo’s and the thought occurred to me, why not find an article that explains the other side of the story. Then I thought of you and your blog, and your strong active hope to inform people about gmo’s. I was wondering if you had any written (kid friendly) articles written by you, or in mind I could use for my presentation.

Thank you so much!”

girl guides

My intelligent, talented and bright niece sent me this email last night.  (She is about the same age as the girl guide in this photo wanting GMO free Girl Guide Cookies.)

Perhaps because I lived in Europe for many years I have a more global perspective on GMOs than most.   Canada and the USA are the only two developed nations that don’t label or ban GMOS.  64 countries in the world ban or label GMOs.  GMOs are not proven safe.  Prior to their release, the only experiments done were by the companies making them.  3 month-long rat studies. A rat has a two year lifespan. GMOs have not been tested for human safety.  These companies have refused to release their raw data.  What are they trying to hide?  Every single independent, long-term study shows major cause for concern.

GMOs use millions upon millions of pounds of pesticides and herbicides to grow.  They cannot grow without these chemical inputs.  These chemicals are carcinogens, hormone disrupters.  Worst of all we can’t even avoid them in N. America since they are not labelled.  Along with the chemicals, which are inextricably linked to their existence, GMOs are poisoning us and the planet.

All this to say that GMOs are not wonderful and my niece Bianca was right.  However, she brings up a point that I too struggle with.

How strong a message to deliver?

Weeping Cedar Woman – Protest Piece

“To sin by silence, when they should protest, makes cowards of men.”

– Ella Wheeler Wilcox

My Uncle Godfrey carved this huge sculpture, called Kle Pil Kanimskit, or Weeping Cedar Woman around 1984 in Tofino. Her breasts are frogs and her tears spill in columns to the ground. One hand is raised in the universal gesture Stop. The other hand points down at the ground. Stop the destruction of the Earth she silently pleads, admonishes, reminds. The Weeping Cedar Woman stood in Tofino’s bay where a historic protest of thousands rallied to prevent the logging of Meares Island where some of BC’s oldest trees stand.

I posted a photo of this sculpture today in honour of the World’s first coordinated protest against GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms), also known as the March Against Monsanto.

The deeperside blog aims to exemplify companies and systems and people doing the right thing. Standing up for our right to know what is in our food is not *just* the right thing to do…

It’s downright exemplary!
