522 Phone Bank

People who want to help support Washington’s Labelling campaign… I have good news!

You can!

From anywhere in the world even in Canada.  I’m not talking financially (although that would be appreciated go to yeson522.com so that they can fund their ads). I’m talking with your time and your wonderful God-Given Gift of the Gab!  That handful of big multinational corporations are spreading lies and waging a deceitful campaign just like they did last year in California.  In Washington however, many of these corporate donors tried to hide their identity.  They were slapped by a lawsuit by none other than Washington State’s Attorney General to get them to comply with campaign rules.

Those monster multinational corporations who oppose the measure say that “labelling is incomplete”.  That it’s not useful given that over half the food sold wouldn’t be covered.  Don’t be fooled by them – they would oppose labelling on any grounds.  The group said it is their number one priority to defeat labelling. They argue that incomplete labelling wouldn’t cover most GE foods, such as restaurants, food service.  Since when is your home delivery pizza labelled? Even in Europe food service isn’t labelled?!  522 affects the  labelling of people food you buy in a grocery store.  Close to 70 percent of the world’s population lives in a nation that requires labelling of GMOs.

Canada and the US are the only two developed countries that don’t have mandatory GMO labelling.  Can you think of anything more important than knowing what you put in the sacred temple of your body?

The ballots are out.  Washington State votes by mail.  Nov 5th is the deadline.  I’ve done phone banking several times over the last week.  It’s simple, and it doesn’t cost a cent for the phone call because the computer calls you!  Here are some happy volunteers clarifying the truth to Washingtonians last week at Nature’s Path!

Remind your Washington friends and family to Vote.  Let’s show those corporate bullies who are covering up the truth about their food.  These bullies and their deep pockets are the only thing coming between you and your right to know.  Let’s show them that their money should have gone to useful, constructive things like feeding the hungry and designing safer food.  Can you believe that they have no higher priority than preventing consumers from finding out the truth?

350, 000 Washingtonians signed the petition that brought this to ballot.   With thousands of endorsements, and thousands of contributors Yes on 522 has the backing of the people.  The question is, will the No side convince enough people who want labelling that the bill (designed along International Standards) is incomplete?  The outcome is going to be too close to call.  Next week, a local Seattle TV station has a pro GMO fairytale to tell.  If there is a time get involved, this is it.  Get involved on any and every level.  Dispel the darkness – Spread the glowing truth!

All you need is a phone and computer!  To get trained go to http://yeson522.com/volunteer-for-yes-on-522/

The deadline is Nov 5th so we have a week left to make history!

GMO OMG LA PREMIERE

September 19th was the LA premiere of Jeremy Seifert’s film GMO OMG.  This was the very same day that BC’s Mayors and councillors voted YES for a GE FREE BC!  I was so excited that I was barely coherent! Having already seen the film, written a review about it and a post about the wild success of the UVIC campus screening… I was wondering what to say about the LA screening at the Landmark Theatre.

First of all what does one WEAR to the Premiere of a Documentary Film dealing with serious GMO issues? In Los Angeles?  Long? Short?  Glittery? Revealing? Funky? Jeans? Following the Style-Diet Principles, my outfit would be Locally-Made, and/or Ethically-Sourced and/or Re-Purposed.

I was hoping to see a bevy of Seiferts barrelling down the aisles at the Landmark Theatre.  Those little kids stole my heart with their poignant and funny one-liners.   Out of the mouths of babes… But the mini Seiferts who stole the show, were at home in bed.   Jen, their beautiful, adorable mom was there;  she starred in the film as herself, the loving, concerned wife and mother every parent can relate with.

Pretty much a packed house, the theatre boasted celebrities like Colin  Farrell who came out to see the film.   In fact, at every point I turned there was a familiar face!  Other notable guests included Cenk Uygur from the Young Turks, Topher Grace from That 70s show, Robyn Lively, Charlie Day from the film “Horrible Bosses”, the cast of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”, Kaitlin Olsen, Rob McElhenny, Glenn Howerton, Molly Sims, Mike Bronner, Laurie David and Maryam Lieberman.

When I got back, I told my friend Misty that Laurie David was there and Misty, she got all excited.  Laurie David produced “An Inconvenient Truth”. That got us talking about Larry David and the potential for comedy and GMOs.  What if Larry David wrote in a character who was striving to be GMO free?!  How many goofy sitcom moments could this character get into?  Just throwing it out there to the universe….

Below, with Mike Bronner of the Dr Bronner’s Soap Family.  Dr Bronner’s family and everyone who saw the film and everyone who is concerned about our food wants  GMOs labelled.  Even if you think that GMOS are good for you, you should want them labelled so you can choose them.

One of the journalists I spoke  to at the after-party said that she was surprised that the film didn’t talk about pesticide poisoning and herbicide poisoning of farm-workers and others.  There is just so much compelling, irrefutable evidence for that.  Toxic Pesticides and herbicides like atrazine and other agricultural toxins aren’t strictly a GMO issue. However, GMOs and pesticides are inextricably linked.  Thus they are directly related, and entirely co-dependent. You can’t grow one without the other….  Again, it brings us back to the irrefutable declaration that people have the right to know what they are eating and what they’re feeding their families. Note Mike’s tee-shirt and support  YES on 522.  Dr Bronner’s family have contributed significantly  towards Washington and California’s labelling campaigns.  Mike announced the they are going nearly double that amount.   However, this is not even one tenth of the what Big Ag and biotech companies will spend fighting people’s right to know.  It’s incredible!  Even if you’re not in Washington, please send in a donation if you can.  If you are able to volunteer with the phone banks please do.  Your help is needed.  Here’s how you can get involved http://yeson522.com/

Audrey Smith and Amanda Valloza-Hlavaty below appeared in Director Jeremy Seifert’s first film “Dive”.  About dumpster diving, “Dive” was an eye-opener to the amount of beautiful, healthy and safe food that is wasted in N. America.  (BTW we currently produce enough food to feed the world twice over.)

Below is Nisha Vida (left), She’s a Fulbright Fellow and Associate Producer for the film.  She is working to Make LA a GMO free zone.  It will happen!  Just a matter of time.  The momentum GE FREE BC will carry over and this film will awaken those not yet in the know.  Here she is with fellow law student Scarlettah J Shaefer.

The timing of this film couldn’t be better.  People are starting to understand that GMOs – that are currently produced in N. America and the rest of the world, not the hope of them – are causing deleterious effects on our health and planet.  We’re not talking about the promise of GMOS; we’re talking about actual reality here.  Folks asked the panel afterwards, “Well what can we do about it?”

There is a simple answer: Support with your dollars  systems and companies that are doing the right thing.  With every meal.  That’s all there is to it.  Support labelling efforts, get involved.  And if you really want to be truly defiant, grow your own food.   As Jeremy’s son Finn said in the film (I’m paraphrasing ) if nobody buys them, companies will have to stop selling them. In Europe, multinational companies reformulate their products to be GMO Free.  I’m talking big companies like Coke, Nestle and Kelloggs.  Already 64 countries ban or require labelling of GMOs.  I was happy to hear of Costa Rica last week declaring they would prohibit GMOs.  Yay Costa Rica!  The US and Canada are the only two developed nations which don’t require labelling of GMOs.   This is going to change and I see change happening.

This film is awakening the multitude.

Erin Brockovich of Food

“Let love be your rocket fuel”

– Robyn O’Brian

I attended a blogger event yesterday in Seattle in support of Washington State’s I522 GMO Labelling campaign.  It was a breakfast sponsored by Nature’s Path and Stoneyfield Farms.  For me it was a last minute affair; I had only found out about it the day before.  Asked to speak, I went having a hunch that I would be inspired.  I was.

I met several amazing folks, working tirelessly to make GMO labelling happen.  I met fellow moms and bloggers, such as Emily  from http://emmycooks.com/.  I also met Keith Tucker who is making a film called ‘Hip Hop is Green’.  Keith said, “Think “Forks over Knives”. Think Hip Hop. Think “FoodInc”. I’m bringing it all together.”  What do I think? I think hell yeah! I think change for good. Keith’s project is called “Pursuit of a Green Planet”  http://poagp.com/  Bring it ON Keith.  (A Journalist, Keith also knows the Gangster Gardener that I posted about previously!).  The worlds needs to harness the incredible momentum of youth and music and ideals.   We must foster Shameless Idealists!

Above I’m standing with author Robyn O’Brian and Delana Jones, campaign manager for YES on I 522

I had the honour and privilege to speak right before Robyn O’Brien.  Robyn is the Erin Brockovich of food.  She is endorsed by none other than Erin Brockovich herself.  A bombshell (Note to self: get Robyn for Style-Diet Shot!), Robyn explained in her mild-mannered but potent way what is wrong with our food supply and how we must take back the right to know what we’re eating.  Her voice trembled with emotion as she spoke about the current generation of American kids called Generation Rx.  Rx is short-hand for prescription drugs (in case you didn’t make this connection immediately).  These Rx’ers are the first generation of American kids to have a shorter expected life span compared to their parents.  Cancer is now the leading cause of death for children under 15.  1 out two men are expected to get cancer and 1 in three women.

But hang on….  Only 10% of cancers are genetic.  That means 90% of cancers are preventable.

Shaking her head, Robyn didn’t want to know what she had learned.  Whereas I have grown up in the Health/Natural Food/Organic world, Robyn comes from a conservative Texas family.  Robyn’s rude awakening was after her daughter suffered an allergic reaction at breakfast one morning.  She soon found herself “under the belly of the beast”, when she tried to determine the causes of allergies.

Robyn thinks it’s less about people being allergic to food and more about being allergic to what has been done TO foods since the 1990s.  This is the time when GMOs were released into the food supply after industry-provided 3 month-long rat studies.  Her case in convincing and she was compelled to write a book about it, calling herself the most unlikely person ever to be a food crusader.  http://www.robynobrien.com/

Unhealthy Truth

Robyn, a true patriot, has a message of love and compassion.  She moved me over and over again to tears during her speech.  She also made me laugh!  Robyn said to approach and broach the issue with our loved ones.  With love.
